As we approach the end of the book of Numbers we encounter another census of the nation of Israel before they enter into the land of promise. It allows for Moses to reflect on the Law forty years after he first received it and to give his final wisdom to the new generation that is getting ready to enter in. When Moses laid his hands on Joshua, he received something that was a free gift. While one could argue that Joshua had earned his position, it was nonetheless freely given by the command of God.
