At this point in the story, the older generation that rebelled against God and refused to enter into the land of Canaan has passed away in the wilderness and the younger generation is moving into the land of Canaan in order to take it. Christ, being the center and the source of life could never be destroyed by death, but instead destroy death by entering into it. Christ being the center of all light, would destroy darkness by allowing Himself to be swallowed by it.
