Numbers 31: Justice and Mercy

Join Pastor Peter as we get ready to wrap up our study through the book of Numbers. While most of the passages we have gone over so far deal with the Law that God gave to His people, or to individual actions, or acts of divine judgement, in this passage we are faced with a very ugly depiction of warfare between the Israelites and the Midianites. This tension is difficult for us to grapple with. Instead we want to see things simply. Either that war is only honorable and justified, or that it is only evil and detestable. The Bible asks us to see it as both, which is why the Bible can describe God as a “man of war”. When we understand the purpose of divine justice and the lengths that God went to in order to achieve it, then we can understand its importance and learn to live in light of this reality!
